End of phase 1 - Assessment Day ....

Its the last day of Phase 1. The Instructor candidates have been fairly nervous about today. In fact they have been nervous about it throughout phase 1. Some trying to casually ask questions, others have actually said they dont want to know. Well today is assessment day.

Its nearly 8 am - I have been up since 6, re running over the planning - assessments of the Instructors - checking my notes and highlighted coaching points for the trainees to address.

Recently I had time to reflect on who and how I spend my time with. I am really lucky to to make a living doing something I love (Teaching Krav Maga - an Israeli martial art ) I was struck by the difference in attitudes of the folks I spend my training time with and the non krav people in my life.

'Getting Sore' or the 'smell of success'

The tempo has picked right up today. The guys are slower off the mark. Stiff, aching and slower to warm up. Several are grumbling a little - getting sore.

The lads have settled into their training now. We have got good movement, good powe and now we are looking at gradually introducing more variables and more pressure.

The Instructor recruits have settled in really well. Great group, keen to learn, keen to train and really "up for it". They have been covering the principles of Krav Maga and applying them to basic techniques and basic threats. On the whole its a really strong group with some really great characters.

A lot of planning, preperation and frankly worry has gone into this first Instructors course. A few sleepless nights too ;-) But, what a lovely bunch of guys.

As an instructor, its easy to sit back when things are going well. The school is growing, classes are busy, we have more enquiries than we can handle. But, its easy to get complacent, lazy even. So I have been reviewing what we offer and and trying to see how we can improve the quality of what is now a very successful programme. And....

I get some strange calls sometimes.

Recently I have had 2 simmilar queries from people on the phone regarding my politics and Krav Maga. Not so long back I also had some probing questions from a journalist. This happens around once a year, often tied up with some political turmoil.

I am wary after one Krav Maga instructor i knew was set up by a TV crew.
