Krav Maga Instructor: Combat Fitness Test

combat fitness test (CFT) Overview

The BKMA runs what is probably the most demanding Krav Maga Instructor Course in Europe. BKMA Instructor training is a genuine right of passage for its participants.  Training is necessarily tough and demanding to candidates both mentally and physically. Krav Maga Instructor training requires candidates to be physically fit or to have prepared extensively before hand. The Combat Fitness Test (CFT) is renown within the Association for its demands and intense nature.  All instructor candidates are required to pass CFT.

Test Objectives

The objective of the Combat Fitness test is to ensure that candidates are physically prepared and fit enough for the rigours of the next 18 days. Experience has show that those unable to pass CFT dont make it through training. CFT is designed therefore to test participants maximally and is passable for most people with a good level of fitness.

Combat Fitness Test Requirements

The association does not disclose the exact requirements of the combat fitness test. The format varies between tests to prevent test specific preperation.  The Association has a database and specific passmarks for each age band per test. Candidates are not advised of the pass mark until after the test. This is done to prevent the possibility of exceptional candidates cruising the test.

Allowances are made for age or long term injury.

Testing procedure

The test process will be clearly explained to all candidates. Candidates will then be warmed up  with a series of mobilising exercises and light rehearsal of the test. Each candidate will be given a spotter to count any repititions or circuits completed.

Test Format

The association uses 2 possible formats. A single test format where the fitness test is conducted in one location.  Or a double test format where the test is split into 2 parts and possibly conducted in 2 locations. Candidates will typically be asked to perform a range of compound exercises over a limited time. There may be an endurance component but this will be limited to running up a maximum of 1.5 miles or rowing a Concept 2 rower for up to 2000 meters at high speed. Candidates should expect a lot of bodyweight exercises, sprints, or possibly kettlebell swings/snatches.

CFT Duration

CFT is usually completed within a single 30 minute period. A Double Test format will typically consist of 2 parts neither exceeding 15 minutes.

Equipment or tools that may be used.

The test may or may not include the use of equipment. Candidates are strongly advised to be familiar with basic kettlebell lifts and the concept 2 rower which have been used in extensively in previous tests.  The following equipment may be used:

Kettlebell 16 or 24 KG, or 12 KG for ladies.(depending on candidate size and any history of previous injuries)

Concept 2 Rower

Matts (body weight exercises)

Where required - basic movement training will be provided before hand.

Preparing for the test

Candidates need to focus on metabolic conditioning work outs. Tabatta, High Intensity Interval Training and sprints will all prove usefull.

Failing the test

In the event a candidate just fails the test, they may be given the opportunity to retake it a few days later.  In the event of a clear failure candidates will be advised to come back on the next course free of charge.

CFT is demanding but achievable.  Candidates need to be fit and active or to have prepared for the test.
